Lily Seriki

Hi, I’m Lily! I’m a tutor based in north London with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistics from the University of Oxford, and a Screenwriting MA from the National Film and Television School. I’m patient, creative and I am always looking for ways to incorporate my students’ passions into my tutoring style, and to foster a fun, supportive learning environment, with sessions that feel as much like play as possible! I love building strong relationships with my students, and to watch their confidence grow in subjects they’ve previously found challenging.

In addition to tutoring I also work in a primary school with years 1, 2, 5 and 6. I provide 1-1 support in English and Maths to pupils with special educational needs such as ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. All my year 6 students exceeded their predicted scores in their SATs and increased their reading age by at least 3 years. In my current year 2 class, I focus on phonics, numeracy and literacy interventions for children with SEN as well as sessions with highly capable children who need stretching.

As I tutor, I primarily teach English and Maths to primary school aged children, both for entrance exams and for general support for SEND students. However I have also tutored GCSE English, and can teach English, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Classical Civilisation up to A-Level. My success at the Oxford University application process also means I can provide insight and support to students considering applying.

I teach children for entrance exams from 7+ to 11+. I went through the 11+ (I ended up at James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich), so I have first hand experience of what the process is like and I can emphasise with my tutees. My teaching experience and personal experience of preparing for the 11+ has taught me just how important it is to focus plenty of time not just on subject knowledge, but also exam technique. Once a student has learned how to ‘crack the code’ of exam questions, and figure out exactly what each question is really testing them on, the whole process becomes a lot less daunting.

At the time of writing this, I am tutoring phonics to a 5 year old who has fallen behind due to hearing problems, core subjects to a set of Dyslexic and Dyscalculic 10 year old twins whose parents have taken them out of school due to lack of support, Maths and English to an Autistic year 7 student, and maths to a year 5 student in preparation for the 11+. This hopefully gives you a feel for the range of students I work with.

Outside of tutoring, I do work as a screenwriter. Some of my work has made it to theatres and TV and I have won awards, including the Popcorn Award.
