BA Hons, Birmingham City College of Art. City and Guilds: City and Islington College. 120 Hours TEFL certification, English Grammar/ Classroom Management training.
I am an experienced teacher and tutor. I tutor children in English and maths, including for entrance exams, from 7+ to 11+ and for general support, alongside school. I also teach English as a foreign language and art.
Recently I worked on one of the Hyde Tutoring English 11+ revision courses, working with students applying to various grammar and independent schools. In recent years I have started working more with 11+ and 13+ students, to prepare them for entrance exams to very academically strenuous schools in London. I appreciate the level of hard work and dedication that the students and tutors need to put into the preparation for these exams to achieve the desired results: being bright is not enough, these schools are very hard to get awarded at place at, so determination and commitment to the process is essential.
In 2017 I gained a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification and subsequently went on to be the EAL/ English intervention tutor at an outstanding preparatory school in central London for four years. There I worked on a one-to-one basis helping children supplement their English skills and overcome SEND issues such as dyslexia, autism and ADHD. I also taught a number of overseas students English from scratch to help their classroom experience and integration into school life run more smoothly. I focused on reading, grammar, spelling and creative writing.
My work at the preparatory school let me to explore my interest in working with SEND pupils. More recently I have been working through the council with SEND teenage children, helping them overcome life’s challenges and continue their English studies whilst they are outside of the school system. I also work with young asylum seekers, teaching them English as a foreign language and giving pastoral support as they navigate difficult circumstances and new lives in a foreign country. As I often provide students with their full education, instead of mainstream school, I am always very up-to-date with curriculum changes and the requirements for each age.
I am also a trained, exhibiting artist who has been making work in painting and photography over a number of years. I encourage my students to try their hand at a variety of disciplines in two and three dimensions from model making to painting and drawing, crafting, printing and many other exciting activities. I have also run after school clubs in digital art, life drawing and photography for KS2 & 3 students, working with digital media and encouraging them to talk about and exhibit their work to others.
I enjoy nurturing young people and utilising my passion for creativity to inspire them and to make learning inspiring, whether the lessons are in art, English, maths or exam skills. I thoroughly enjoy meeting and teaching children of all ages and abilities, I bring warmth, patience and a dash of humour to all my roles and am proud to have enhanced the lives of some wonderful souls over the years.
