I am an experienced Economics teacher (PGCE, QTS) and Head of Department with 9 years of experience, mostly in private schools, which include Rugby, Winchester, and St Mary’s Ascot. I have an excellent record of A*/A results, that have always exceeded the national average and my own school’s average, and my results have always been the highest or second highest results in the Sixth Form for ‘Value Added’. I am an examiner for AQA and Edexcel and I bring deep subject expertise and insider knowledge of how mark schemes are used to evaluate work and what examiners are looking for in top-grade response.
Over the years, I have developed extensive experience supporting UCAS applications for Economics and related degrees, as well as preparing pupils for admissions tests including the TSA, and more recently, TARA. In schools I have served, I have been responsible for preparing Oxbridge Economics applicants. I believe in tailoring a bespoke programme for each pupil, reflecting their interests and needs. This will involve discussing chosen readings, giving feedback on their personal statement, conducting mock interviews, and preparing for admissions tests. With this approach, I have helped pupils secure offers from Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford and Yale.
Throughout my career I have worked extensively with students with a range of SEND conditions, including: dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and ASD. I have accumulated substantial training, and I have a lot of experience in differentiating lessons to meet the needs of SEND pupils. This is something I have also supported colleagues with over the years, both experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers.
I have been tutoring online for as many years as I have been teaching. My sessions are structured but highly responsive to the needs of each pupil. Sessions might involve helping a pupil to interpret essay titles, giving feedback on essays or papers they submit, tackling content they are struggling with, or helping them to revise topics for an upcoming test. Between sessions, I set targeted tasks aimed at addressing their weaknesses – often practice questions – which we discuss in the subsequent session. The format suits Economics tutoring well since so much of it is about developing written technique and applying concepts to current examples, both of which translate effectively online.
