As the spring term draws to a close, the Easter holidays and the summer term are a crucial time for families preparing for 7+, 8+, 9+ 10+ and 11+ entrance exams. As the last full term before the autumn assessments, it is important to set up routines that encourage steady progress while protecting your child’s wellbeing. A little structure now can make all the difference to their confidence in the months ahead.
Create a manageable weekly routine
Short and regular study sessions are far more effective than long periods of cramming. Younger children in the 7+ or 8+ age group benefit from 45 min minutes of focused work supported by a parent, three times a week. Older children preparing for the 10+ or 11+ can usually manage 1 hour to 1.5 hours three times a week with adult support, less time for independent studying.
Consistency is what counts. Try to build revision into the week in a way that feels natural, such as a reasoning exercise after school or a creative writing task at the weekend.
Focus on core skills
Entrance exams test knowledge but also problem solving and resilience. This term is the time to strengthen:
English by reading widely, practising creative writing, and developing comprehension skills.
Maths by working on mental arithmetic, problem solving and applying maths to everyday situations.
Reasoning by doing puzzles, playing logic games and building vocabulary.
Even everyday activities, like talking about a news story over dinner or playing a strategy game together, help children sharpen their skill set.
Make use of mock papers
Introduce practice papers gradually so your child becomes familiar with the exam style. At first, work through sections together. As confidence grows, begin adding timed practice. Reviewing mistakes and talking through approaches is just as valuable as getting the answers right.
Balance work with rest
With brighter evenings and busy school days, children can tire quickly in Summer term. Downtime is just as important as study time. Space for outdoor play in the sunshine, reading for pleasure, and relaxed family activities helps children return to revision with a clearer mind.
