How to Keep Learning on Track This Summer

As the school year winds down, the summer holidays bring a much-needed break – for children, parents, and teachers alike. But while rest and play are essential, it’s also worth being mindful of what’s known as the “summer slide” – the learning loss that can happen when children take an extended break from structured learning.

Research shows that students, particularly in primary school, can lose up to two months of progress in maths and reading over the summer. This can make the return to school in September feel like a scramble to catch up – especially for those facing entrance exams or key milestones in the next academic year.

How can you help your child stay learning-ready over the break?

Here are a few ideas:

📚 1. Keep reading little and often

Whether it’s a daily reading habit, a family book challenge, or audiobooks during long journeys – regular exposure to words builds vocabulary, comprehension and confidence.

✏️ 2. Practise core skills in short bursts

A few minutes a day spent on times tables, handwriting or grammar can make a big difference by September. Keep it light – puzzle books, flashcards and games work well.

🎲 3. Make learning part of everyday life

Cooking can become a maths lesson. Nature walks can spark writing. Travel invites geography. Children often learn best when it doesn’t feel like ‘schoolwork’.

🧠 4. Build in structured learning time

While relaxation matters, a routine that includes even 2-3 short learning sessions per week can help maintain momentum. It’s especially useful for children preparing for entrance exams.
