How to Choose the Right Exam Preparation Resources

There’s no shortage of revision books, practice papers and online platforms for school entrance exams – but how do you know which ones are actually useful?

At Hyde Tutoring, we’re often asked about the best resources to use when preparing for exams like the 11+, 10+, or 13+. The truth is, there’s no single magic formula. But here’s how we help families find the right balance and avoid common pitfalls.

1. Mix It Up

It’s tempting to stick with a workbook or resource your child feels comfortable with, but this can create a false sense of security.
Exams often feature a variety of question styles, so it’s important for students to practise with different formats and unfamiliar wording. Variety helps build adaptability, which is just as important as accuracy.

2. Use Online Resources But Don’t Rely on Them

Platforms like Atom can be an excellent way to boost engagement, especially when a child feels stuck or needs a change of pace.
But online tools alone aren’t enough. They can complement preparation, but shouldn’t replace guided support and focused teaching. We often use these platforms as part of a wider strategy, particularly in our 1:1 sessions or revision courses.

3. Be Strategic with Practice Papers

Practice papers are useful – but not on their own. In fact, starting too early or choosing papers that are too advanced can knock a child’s confidence.
Here’s how we recommend using them:

  • Start small and build gradually

  • Ensure the level is age-appropriate

  • Use them as a tool for identifying gaps

  • Always go through papers together. Reviewing mistakes is where the real learning happens

At Hyde Tutoring, we focus on developing the skills behind the papers, not just racing through them.

4. Work With Your Child, Don’t Just Set Work

Observing how your child approaches questions can be hugely revealing.
Do they skip around? Rush through? Avoid certain sections? Many children aren’t sure how to check their work properly, or don’t realise they should go back to unanswered questions. These are all teachable moments that are easily missed without adult guidance.

In our tutoring sessions, we help children build good habits, from timing strategies to exam mindset.

5. Take Breaks And Really Listen

More work doesn’t always mean better outcomes. Children learn best when they feel calm, supported, and confident.
That’s why the most valuable resource in any exam preparation process is this: a tutor, parent or adult who is truly listening and responding to how the child is feeling.
